What is the halo effect? Is this the glazed over look in the eyes of my boys I have seen before
after an especially long X-Box 360 marathon? Maybe, but that is not what I am talking about.
What I am talking about is the way people, places and events are seen in a different light once the individual, union, opportunity or event has passed away. Obviously in light of yesterday’s news about the death of Michael Jackson, and the subsequent outpouring of love and coverage toward and about this man, the concept of the halo effect could not help but surface in my mind this morning. But it is not just that news even that has made me ponder
the halo effect through the years.
I have heard jilted lovers glow about their ex after all the rubble is cleared. I have heard my wife speak favorably about a former boss who she previously denigrated and disrespected. I have heard my daughter speak about individuals in a completely different light once they were no longer in her life…
I am sure there are many other examples… but I am off and running for a full day of (finally) “closing” on our home, entertaining the in-laws who just arrived last night, sorting boxes and most of all enjoying the kids before they all disburse for their summer stints with their fathers.
Just pondering all of this today. What is it about endings that seems to bring about the halo effect?
I’ll leave you with the topic to discuss… “tawk amongst yourselves”…
I’ll be back… and I’ll see you on your blogs soon as well!

In all honesty…I won’t miss that man…
He was such a good looking guy BEFORE all
that plastic surgery…Heck…He should have
just stopped after the first nose job…Things
would have been so much better for him…
I’m gonna miss Farrah the most…After watching
her battle with cancer and all that she was going
through and thinking of how strong she was and
how she tried to smile the whole way through…
What pissed me off is that her son couldn’t even
straighten up for her…Couldn’t get his life together
before she passed…
So…Do you think they’ll bury Michael or will they
recycle him? :-/

You put it so well!! We do that – well, some of us do. We want to remember the good, because the bad is simply unpleasant. There are others, though, who tend to only remember the bad. Funny how our personalities do that.
I am with Laurie – I wasn’t a huge MJ fan when he was popular, but became even less of a fan as his life got more strange and freaky. I was watching some of the coverage yesterday and yes, he was talented. That man could dance! But he was not able to keep a relationship, dangled babies out of windows, had questionable relationships with young boys and couldn’t embrace his own identity. This is not someone we should strive to emulate. Was he a music icon? Yes. But like Elvis and many others, he just couldn’t seem to stick to reality.
Hey Laurie! I agree. Was never a big MJ fan… and mostly had pity for the life he was led through and how damaged he was and what a tortured soul he was. I was moved by Farrah’s story as well!
Funny with the recycling! HA!!

Hey there CCT!!
That does seem to be what we often do. We want to see that favorable light. And you are right, I have encountered those who only remember the dark shadows of light and don’t even acknowledge that light the halo side contributed!
I’m with Laurie on the above also… good to read ya!
Hahaha, yea, sometimes when I think back about a person I particularly hated, I realised that “Hey, maybe I was just being too sensitive”
Maybe it’s because now that we have distanced ourselves from the person, we are able to think and reflect rationally. Hmmm…hahahaa, such food for thought:)
Josh
You know what Josh… I think you may have hit on something there! I think that is true! {HUGS}!! Good to read you!!

I grew up listening to MJ and to be honest I laughed at the jokes even made some of my own. However as I age and my own mortality becomes ever more obvious to me, I wonder what will be said of me when I pass. I tend to swim against the current in all that I do. Ok not to the extent MJ did but still I have never really been in the “norm” and have always been good with that. Will the halo effect preserve my image in my death or will I solely be remembered for my eccentricities?
I appreciate your meditations on this issue. We all want to be remembered for the best in us, the best we brought to the world around us!
