I posted back in April on the fact that, in essence, James Dobson does not speak for me when it comes to my focus on my family (this was just before I moved my bridgeout blog from Blogger to WordPress, so I will copy that post below). I stumbled across a website that is actually titled: “James Dobson Doesn’t Speak for Me.” Although that site was set into motion by Dobson’s comments against Senator Barack Obama, the points made can translate across the board to a variety of reasons why I have believed for decades that Dobson doesn’t speak for me either! (The site has a statement you can sign to that effect).
Here are some examples from their site:
He doesn’t speak for me when he uses religion as a wedge to divide;
He doesn’t speak for me when he speaks as the final arbiter on the meaning of the Bible;
James Dobson doesn’t speak for me when he uses the beliefs of others as a line of attack;
He doesn’t speak for me when he denigrates his neighbor’s views when they don’t line up with his;
He doesn’t speak for me when he seeks to confine the values of my faith to two or three issues alone;
Here is my April post which details more reasons why Dobson doesn’t speak for me… not in politics, not on the Bible and not on family!
April 16, 2008: “Focus on the (gay) Family”
I discovered the “love won out” site after visiting “Capitol 3 Conservatives.” The logo in the sidebar attracted me. Here is what I found at the “love won out” site.
“Focus on the Family’s Love Won Out ministry exhorts and equips the church to respond in a Christ-like way to the issue of homosexuality. And to those who struggle with unwanted same-sex attractions, we offer the Gospel hope that these desires can be overcome.”
Have any of you seen these folks (Alliance Defense Fund, Sally Kern, Restore America, Sen. George, Marylin Shannon, etc) respond in a “Christ like way” to the LGBT community? Does not appear that they are responding to LGBT Oregonians in such a way. As an aside, do any of you have unwanted same-sex attractions?
How did I just KNOW that James Dobson had his hand in this! Could it be because he had caused me so much pain and disappointment since childhood? His famous mantra about “breaking the will of a child” and parenting a “strong willed child” was preached at church through the years. Unfortunately my father (who also misinterpreted “spare the rod and spoil the child“) took Dobson’s teachings to the extreme which made things extra unpleasant as a child.
I said recently to my family when I found out that Dobson (one of the founders of the Alliance Defense Fund) was trying to delay and undo Oregon Domestic Partnerships: “when is James Dobson going to stop f*@%$&# with my life?”

By way of contrast, I wish that any of the individuals mentioned above would spend a little time at the Faith in America site, and give thought to their mission statement. It is much longer than this line, but this line encapsulates the essence:
“The mission of Faith In America, Inc. is the emancipation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from bigotry disguised as religious truth.”

im glad to see efforts to show opposition to dobsons bogus science and teachings but sadly i dont think it will shut him up
I’m afraid that all of these people are going to be in for a real surprise when the separation of the sheep and goats begins. I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes.
Dobson is a sad, sad man.
I just got a FW from his group about the “radical homosexual agenda.”
Just watch… soon enough, we’ll learn of Dobson’s gay secret life.
Well, as we all know he won’t keep is nose out
of peoples lives.
I’m with crallspace. Just wait till Dobson gets
caught with his pecker in a peep hole. Or he could
be a bottom.
We’ll just wait and see.
HUGS!!!!!
ps. Helga and Jack are packed and ready to take
off! We’re leaving this morning and it’s raining.
UGH!
queerunity: it may not shut him up, but he may lose a little of his “hot air” and his unquestioning audience! We can hope folks will wake up and think for themselves.
Lewis: I have had that kind of feeling through the years too… they just “assume” they have the “all access pass” to knowledge and heaven… time will tell!
crallspace: I would LOVE to see THAT email! I am always mystified at what this “agenda” is they keep stating gay individuals have. And I used to think he may get caught years ago when I’d hear the stuff he was “looking into”… again, time will tell!
Exactly Laurie… we will just have to wait and see!
{HUGS}!!
PS- SWEET!! Hope the journey is fun, relaxing, and SUNNY! Look forward to pics!!
I can’t stand James Dobson. He for some reason thinks it’s his personal duty to spiritually attack everyone who disagrees with him.
He needs that follow that bumper sticker that says: Focus on your own damn family
C
This is the only thing I could find…
http://www.citizenlink.org/turnsignal/A000007696.cfm
I deleted the email… I’m sure there’s more at the site, but I don’t feel like trudging through garbage today.
Notice other action items there. Hard to recognize these people as loving Christians, that’s for sure.
Hey C!! I second that bumper sticker!! This focus on everyone else but “self” is part of why our communities, churches and country are in such disarray! It all needs to begin with self, and one’s own home!
Thank you crall! I appreciate the link! Understood on not wanting to dig through the garbage!
I have filtered through that link… and your last line is dead on there!
