At this point we have just under two weeks left until July 8, 08 when a three judge panel will hear the appeal to Lemons v. Bradbury (Basic Rights Oregon’s history of this case here). What could this mean for Oregon Domestic Partnerships and anti-discrimination? Gay Rights Watch details below:
“The one thing that could come to bite us in the ass very soon is the Lemons v. Bradbury case. Pro-equality Oregonians won the first battle, but the Arizona based ‘Alliance Defense Fund’ has appealed and it will now be heard by a three judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Oral arguments will be heard in Portland on the morning of Tuesday, July 8. It’s simply just another round in the legal battle, though if lost, could have serious consequences by putting at least one of these laws on the ballot in November 2008.”
I am hopeful that what 365Gay.com stated will indeed be true! “Oregon’s largest LGBT civil rights organization believes the panel will uphold the February ruling.” (When Judge Mosman decided to allow the DPs to go forward).

ARIZONA BASED???!!! They aren’t even from
Oregon! They should just shut their fat lips!
I pray for the best!
HUGS!!!
Good luck, We will be facing something similar in November here is California. A few conservatives in Orange County have bank-rolled getting the anti-gay marriage vote on the ballot.
California ruled that Marriage is a fundamental right.
Laurie: I know! I was incredulous as I discovered where each group came from that was sticking their noses in from out of state to mess with Oregon equality! Thanks for your support– as always!
{HUGS}!!
Thanks Dit, and I have been reading up on the pending battle in CA! It is an understatement to say that all eyes are on CA. to see what happens between now and November! I am pulling for you all!!
The vast majority of any of the right-wing initiatives and general crud is bankrolled from outside of Oregon. That is a big part of why there is such a call to reform the initiative process here.
FYI, follow the money behind the Alliance Defense Fund and you will, in short order, wind up at the doorstep of the Prince family (extremely wealthy, right-wing family with close ties to the Bush Whitehouse-tons of money to their “causes”) whose current spearhead, Erik, also incidentally happens to be a co-founder and current head of Blackwater. Turn that one and its implications over in your head for awhile.
Oregonian37: I did look into these things on Wikipedia… lots of weirdness with Erik Prince… and then Blackwater? What a mess! Sure enough Prince’s father is the co-founder of the “Family Research Council”… in cahoots with James Dobson, and also aligned with the Alliance Defense Fund. You know your stuff Debra!
