My home state of California has super news today as the California Supreme Court legalizes same-sex marriage!! More official news and specifics regarding this wonderful and landmark decision here, here and here.
I was wondering how long it would be until this hit the radar of the ADF, and it already has. The ADF is handling the California victory similar to the way ADF has handled our equality laws here in Oregon. How long until some other anti-gay group decides they are going to file an initiative to put the whole issue to a vote in November? Who knows! But as we here in Oregon wait 49 more days to find out whether our Domestic Partnership Law is put to a vote in November, I know we are still celebrating for our neighbors in California!

I think absolute awareness and vigilence will help keep this from galvanizing the “base” effectively. Even the haters get tired of hating after awhile. California and Oregon both have to be proactive in reaching out to dispell the myths that promote homophobia. California, in particular, will need to work extra-hard to turn out Dems because this decision will line up folks behind McCain who really don’t like him. Getting the base out to vote has always been an effective strategy, just not as effective as it once was.

oregonian37: Awareness and vigilance– two of the most important ingredients! I really DO hope that folks in our country will not fall for the same “rally cry” that led them to re-elect Bush in ‘04. You cannot run a country based solely on fear of homosexuals!
